CASSADAGA · A COMMUNITY WITH AN INNER LIFE
Cassadaga, Florida: The Depth of a Community Built Around Spiritual Life
Cassadaga’s history includes a land gift, a religious association and generations of people choosing to live near others who share their beliefs. Those details give the place a depth that its reputation for mystery can easily obscure. I find the community itself the most interesting place to begin.

A Florida home for a shared tradition
The Southern Cassadaga Spiritualist Camp’s history connects its founding with George Colby and people associated with Lily Dale, New York, who wanted a winter Spiritualist camp in Florida. The association formed in 1894. Colby deeded 35 acres to its founders in 1895.
The camp also recounts a spiritual origin story about Colby being guided to the land. That account belongs to the community’s religious tradition. The land transfer gives another, tangible dimension to the beginning: a belief and an intention acquired space in which people could gather.
That is a substantial commitment. A community needs places for people to live, meet, learn and take responsibility for what they hold in common.
Historic recognition, continuing use
Cassadaga’s camp became a National Register historic district in 1991. The recognition concerns a place that continues to have a religious purpose for its members.
The Colby Memorial Temple is part of that continuing life, along with classes, teachers, a bookstore and the association’s mediums and healers. The camp describes a certification process of at least four years for its certified practitioners.
Those institutional details deserve attention. They show a community carrying a tradition through study, organization and shared expectations. The buildings have meaning because people still use them for purposes they consider important.

Understanding does not require agreement
Spiritualism, as the camp describes it, includes belief in the continuity of personal identity after death and communication through mediumship. These are the community’s religious beliefs. Knowing how members describe them is part of understanding the place respectfully.
A visitor can retain their own convictions while being interested in somebody else’s. The worthwhile question is how this tradition gives shape to life here: why people gather, what they study and how a small community carries its identity across generations.
I appreciate the camp’s stated welcome to believers, skeptics and the simply curious. It leaves room for an encounter that is thoughtful without requiring everyone to reach the same conclusion.
A particular place within Volusia
Cassadaga adds a distinctive chapter to the county’s cultural geography. Barberville Pioneer Settlement preserves practical knowledge through buildings and teaching. Cassadaga carries a different inheritance through religious life and an ongoing residential community.
Both invite the visitor to recognize that a historic place has people behind it. Someone keeps the records, tends the setting, welcomes questions and carries responsibility into another year.
The more closely I consider Cassadaga, the more its continuity interests me. A small Florida community has maintained a shared purpose through more than a century of change around it. Its individuality has substance because that purpose still matters to the people who live it.
Cassadaga’s most lasting invitation is to look beyond a reputation and encounter a community. The history becomes richer when its buildings, beliefs and ordinary responsibilities can be seen together.
