Chemical, Polymer & Advanced Materials Manufacturing Marketing Consultant

Your customer is not shopping for an impressive molecule. The customer is trying to make a coating adhere, a battery run cooler, a package protect longer, a line move faster, a component weigh less or a product survive an environment that keeps winning. I help materials manufacturers turn technical capability into buyer understanding, disciplined evaluation, qualified RFQs and durable commercial supply.

Executive Brief
The chemistry is only half the sale.

A technically good material can remain commercially invisible when buyers cannot connect it to their application, evidence, approval path or supply risk. I fix that connection.

  • I position materials around operating problems and decision criteria.
  • I organize grade data so humans, search engines and AI systems can interpret it.
  • I design inquiry and sample paths that collect useful application context.
  • I help technical, commercial and executive teams tell one credible story.
  • I build content for screening, testing, scale-up, RFQs and recurring supply.
  • I make claim ownership, document control and review gates visible.
  • I connect marketing activity to qualifications, quote value and production revenue.
  • I can advise leadership, build the system and do the difficult work myself.
Who Hires Me

The product may be technically strong. The commercial system may still be making life unnecessarily difficult.

I work directly with owners, CEOs, presidents, commercial leaders, technical founders, business-development teams, marketing directors, product managers and private-equity operating partners. Sometimes the company has a capable marketing team that needs senior industrial depth. Sometimes marketing is one person with fourteen priorities. Sometimes the founder, sales leader and laboratory have each built a different version of the truth.

The request rarely arrives as “please repair the path between application intent and qualification revenue.” It sounds more human: traffic is weak, leads are poor, a new grade is not moving, distributors are not creating demand, sample follow-up is inconsistent, sales cycles are opaque, the website sounds generic, a facility expansion needs demand, or leadership cannot tell which marketing spend influences real programs.

You are not expected to arrive with the service already chosen. Bring a commercial problem, a growth goal, an uncomfortable pattern or a question that refuses to become smaller. I can help determine if the work calls for research, positioning, product data, a website, content, AI discovery, account development, sales tools, CRM design, reputation strategy or a focused operating project.

“The company is hard to discover.”I map real buyer language across chemistry, property, process, substrate, application, failure mode and replacement need.
“The company is easy to find and hard to understand.”I rebuild the message hierarchy so product families, grades, evidence and next steps form one useful decision path.
“Inquiries consume technical time but rarely convert.”I add fit questions, gates, routing and follow-up logic before application engineers inherit another mystery.
“Trials disappear into the organization.”I define stages, owners, evidence, next actions and commercial value from initial screen through production supply.
“Growth depends on accounts already known.”I identify adjacent applications, second-source opportunities, replacement triggers and buying organizations that fit the actual capability.
“Marketing produces activity, not confidence.”I replace decorative output with technical proof, buyer utility, commercial instrumentation and accountable executive choices.
Portfolio and Manufacturing Scope

A market is not defined by a dramatic material name. It is defined by a job, an environment and a path to use.

Advanced materials can be powders, pellets, rolls, sheets, films, fibers, liquids, gases, pastes, dispersions, billets, cast shapes or fully converted forms. Some become ingredients. Some become structures. Some control surfaces, friction, heat, electricity, moisture, light, purity, corrosion or biological interaction. The commercial work changes with the form, the value density, the buyer’s process and the consequence of a poor choice.

A periodic table in the brochure is not a positioning strategy. I organize the portfolio around the decisions customers actually make.

Toll and contract production

Mixing, reaction, milling, dispersion, coating, drying, converting, filling, packaging and managed scale-up.

Circular and lower-impact materials

Recycled, reclaimed, bio-derived or resource-efficient offerings presented with controlled, product-specific evidence.

Decision Network

The person who discovers a material may not test it, approve it, quote it or live with it.

A material sale can cross laboratories, engineering groups, plants, quality systems, sourcing organizations and customer executives before the first production order. Marketing that speaks to a single imaginary “decision maker” loses the practical questions that move an opportunity.

Formulator or scientist

Asks about chemistry, interaction, experimental behavior, alternatives, formulation space and credible test methods.

Design engineer

Needs a property window, operating limits, geometry or substrate context, design evidence and change implications.

Process engineer

Examines mixing, dispensing, molding, curing, coating, machining, handling, takt time, yield and production variation.

Application engineer

Translates requirements into candidate materials, samples, protocols, technical questions and corrective iterations.

Quality

Looks for specifications, lot consistency, test methods, certificates, traceability, deviations and change control.

EHS and product stewardship

Reviews hazard communication, exposure, storage, handling, reporting, restricted substances and approved statements.

Procurement

Evaluates price, volume, lead time, logistics, dual sourcing, commercial terms, continuity and supplier responsiveness.

Operations

Wants reliable supply, manageable handling, predictable process behavior, less downtime and fewer production surprises.

OEM or brand owner

May own the approved-material list, program requirements, warranties, sustainability demands and specification authority.

Distributor

Needs portfolio clarity, protected opportunity rules, useful sales tools, inventory logic and rapid technical access.

Finance and leadership

Care about growth quality, capacity utilization, working capital, margin, concentration, risk and strategic fit.

End customer or public stakeholder

May influence acceptability through safety expectations, environmental concerns, community trust and brand reputation.

The best message system does not flatten these perspectives into one slogan. It gives each participant enough accurate information to perform the next decision. That is how technical clarity becomes commercial velocity.
Application Positioning

Start with the expensive condition the customer wants to change.

A buyer may search for dielectric breakdown, adhesive failure on a low-surface-energy substrate, lubricant washout, thermal cycling, chloride exposure, abrasion, sterilization resistance, outgassing, moisture transmission, flame behavior, purity, weight reduction or a discontinued grade. The buyer’s language is usually closer to a constraint than a chemistry lecture.

I build positioning from the application backward: the current condition, the desired outcome, the physical or chemical mechanism, the operating environment, the processing constraints, the relevant material family, the evidence and the next test. This creates useful content without promising universal performance.

“High performance” cannot carry the entire portfolio. If every grade is high performance, the phrase eventually performs very little.

Failure-led discovery

Address delamination, corrosion, cracking, thermal runaway, fouling, contamination, leakage, wear, discoloration, drift or premature service loss.

Performance-led selection

Connect thermal, mechanical, electrical, chemical, optical, rheological, barrier and surface properties to a real use.

Process-led fit

Explain cure, viscosity, pot life, melt behavior, coating window, mixing, tooling, dwell, deposition, machining or finishing implications.

Change-led demand

Prepare for reformulation, obsolescence, restricted inputs, localization, redesign, production transfer and second-source projects.

Economics-led value

Frame scrap, rework, energy, labor, throughput, maintenance, service life, warranty exposure and total installed cost carefully.

Risk-led confidence

Show supply continuity, lot control, technical access, packaging, shelf life, capacity, traceability and responsible change communication.

Material-Fit Window

A property value is not a recommendation. Fit lives inside a system.

The same grade can succeed in one configuration and fail in another because substrate preparation, thickness, cure, geometry, loading, exposure, aging, equipment or test method changed. Good marketing makes the selection variables visible enough to support screening while preserving the role of qualified technical review.

Material identityChemistry, grade, form, composition, reinforcement and meaningful variants
Substrate or mating systemSurface energy, roughness, contamination, pretreatment and material pair
Operating environmentTemperature, chemicals, humidity, pressure, radiation, vibration and weather
Mechanical demandLoad, fatigue, impact, creep, abrasion, flexure and dimensional stability
Electrical behaviorConductivity, insulation, dielectric strength, dissipation and shielding
Thermal behaviorConductivity, expansion, cycling, heat capacity, transition and degradation
Optical behaviorTransmission, haze, color, refractive function, UV exposure and stability
Process windowViscosity, cure, dwell, pressure, tooling, equipment and line conditions
Geometry and formThickness, bead, bond line, particle size, porosity, tolerance and orientation
Time and agingShelf life, working life, fatigue, diffusion, weathering and service interval
Test contextMethod, specimen, conditioning, units, sample size and acceptance rule
Quality windowSpecification limits, lot variation, certificate data and release controls
Supply contextVolume, lead time, packaging, minimum order, region and continuity plan
Approval contextCustomer, facility, OEM, standard, jurisdiction and program restrictions
Commercial contextCost-in-use, conversion cost, waste, risk, service burden and value creation

A disciplined claim stays inside the tested window. Marketing can help a buyer understand relevance and ask a better question. It should not turn a laboratory value into a blanket assurance for every substrate, process, environment or design.

Product and Grade Master Data

The website, sales deck, distributor portal and AI answer should not invent four versions of the same grade.

Materials businesses often accumulate product truth across ERP records, laboratory files, TDS PDFs, SDS systems, spreadsheets, regulatory statements, legacy websites, distributor listings and the memory of one application engineer everyone calls. That fragmentation slows launches, creates claim drift and makes portfolio comparison harder than it needs to be.

I help define a commercial product master that connects controlled technical sources to approved public language. The job is not to expose every internal field. It is to establish identity, ownership, revision logic and a reliable publishing path.

Controlled Technical Evidence

A PDF library is useful only when the right document is current, findable and attached to the right decision.

Technical documents are not accessories to the sale. They often determine if a material enters a screen, survives supplier onboarding, reaches a plant trial or gets removed from consideration. I help build the public and gated document experience around purpose, ownership and revision.

Technical data sheet

Identity, typical or specification properties, methods, conditions, processing context, use guidance and appropriate limitations.

Safety data sheet

Hazard communication in the required format, published and maintained through the responsible compliance process.

Certificate of analysis

Lot-specific results or attestations connected to the purchasing and quality relationship, not confused with typical data.

Specification

Controlled acceptance criteria, test methods, tolerances, revision and agreement context for supply.

Processing guide

Preparation, equipment, parameters, cure, cleaning, handling, troubleshooting and boundary conditions.

Application note

A defined use, technical problem, evaluation, relevant variables and evidence with careful transferability language.

Regulatory statement

Product-specific status, jurisdiction, authorized use, exclusions, issue date and responsible approval.

Declaration or questionnaire

Customer-required substance, sourcing, origin, compliance or sustainability information under controlled review.

Test report

Method, specimen, conditioning, equipment, result, uncertainty or variation, laboratory and interpretation boundary.

Change notice

Material, process, site, supplier, formulation, packaging or document changes communicated to affected customers.

Storage and shelf-life guidance

Conditions, packaging integrity, handling after opening, retest policy and expiration interpretation.

Case evidence

Problem, decision, implementation and verified outcome disclosed at a level the customer and manufacturer approve.

Hazard communication deserves its own authority. OSHA states that chemical manufacturers and importers evaluate hazards and prepare labels and safety data sheets for hazardous chemicals. I can improve access, navigation, revision presentation and commercial integration; qualified owners must create and approve the underlying hazard content. See OSHA Hazard Communication and OSHA’s mandatory SDS Appendix D.
Samples and Evaluation

A sample without context is an expensive envelope with optimism inside.

A low-friction sample form can increase shipments while reducing learning. The material arrives with no clear substrate, test, process, evaluator, acceptance criterion, volume, decision date or commercial sponsor. Follow-up becomes “did you try it?” and the answer disappears into an inbox.

I design a proportional sample system. Early researchers should not face a procurement interrogation, yet costly, limited, hazardous, custom, high-purity or application-sensitive samples need enough information to protect technical time and create a useful evaluation.

Need framedProblem and consequence
Fit screenedObvious mismatches removed

Self-service lane

Known products, standard quantities and established buyers with clear document access and simple follow-up.

Application-assisted lane

New uses, uncertain fit, important process variables or performance questions requiring technical exchange.

Controlled-development lane

Custom formulation, confidentiality, limited material, regulated use, complex hazards or strategic program conditions.

Scale Reality

The beaker can approve an idea. The production line decides if it has a business.

Laboratory screening may prove an interesting mechanism under controlled conditions. Commercial adoption still depends on mixing, heat transfer, coating uniformity, drying, cure, cycle time, contamination, handling, equipment compatibility, yield, inspection, packaging, logistics and supply consistency. A material can be brilliant and still be awkward at 600 units an hour.

I help manufacturers tell the scale story honestly. That means separating exploratory evidence from pilot evidence, pilot evidence from plant evidence and plant evidence from broad application claims.

Bench question

Does the material show the relevant behavior under a defined small-scale method?

Pilot question

Can the customer reproduce performance with representative equipment and process variation?

Production question

Can operators, controls, inspection and takt requirements support the material repeatedly?

Supply question

Can both organizations maintain quality, packaging, capacity, logistics, change control and technical support?

Scale-up creates different failure modes.Shear, residence time, moisture, thermal gradients, cure kinetics, deposition, dispersion and contamination can change with equipment and volume.
The customer’s process is part of the proposition.Content should help evaluators understand equipment, preparation, sequence, inspection and reasonable troubleshooting boundaries.
Production trials need commercial ownership.A trial should have material quantity, timing, facility, line, success criteria, technical support, evidence capture and a decision meeting.
Capacity claims need operational truth.Nominal equipment capacity is not the same as available, qualified capacity for the grade, package, region and schedule involved.
RFI, RFP, RFQ and Specification Discipline

Do not let the bid document become the first moment anyone decides what a good opportunity looks like.

Materials opportunities can arrive as supplier questionnaires, approved-vendor requests, technical data calls, sustainability surveys, RFIs, RFPs, RFQs, specification packages or a spreadsheet with 180 fields and no explanation. I help create a response system that protects technical resources and increases the quality of pursued work.

The first decision is not how fast to answer. It is if the opportunity fits capability, strategy, margin, capacity, geography, hazard profile, qualification burden, forecast credibility and required commercial terms. The pursuit rule should be explicit enough that sales, technical, operations and leadership reach the same conclusion.

Master answer libraryApproved company, facility, quality, technical, sustainability, supply and service statements with owners and review dates.
Requirement matrixEvery customer requirement mapped to response, evidence, exception, owner, status and final commitment.
Assumption registerVolumes, grades, test methods, packaging, lead times, forecasts, change conditions and exclusions kept visible.
Red-team reviewTechnical accuracy, claim scope, commercial risk, operational feasibility and unanswered customer intent challenged before submission.
Reuse without driftPrior answers accelerate work only when the source remains current for the product, site, jurisdiction and requested use.
Post-bid learningWin, loss, no-decision, qualification delay and margin outcome feed the next pursuit choice.
A fast response to a poor-fit RFQ is still a poor use of time. Speed matters after judgment.
Custom, Toll and Contract Manufacturing

Custom capability needs a front door that distinguishes a promising program from an interesting chemistry conversation.

Custom formulators, compounders, toll processors, coaters, converters and contract manufacturers sell more than equipment access. Customers evaluate development depth, process knowledge, confidentiality, scale, quality, raw-material control, analytical capability, technology transfer, documentation and long-term supply behavior.

I build the intake and content around the stage of the opportunity. An early formulation problem should not be forced through the same form as a validated recipe seeking a second production site.

Concept and feasibility

Desired function, prohibited inputs, target conditions, available evidence, timeline, ownership and definition of a useful experiment.

Existing formula transfer

Process instructions, bill of material, critical parameters, analytical methods, equipment equivalence, IP rights and validation plan.

Scale-up project

Bench or pilot history, mixing and heat-transfer behavior, hazards, yields, cleaning, batch size, packaging and acceptance criteria.

Overflow or continuity source

Qualified process, capacity window, forecasts, raw-material ownership, release testing, inventory and emergency conditions.

Specialized unit operation

Reaction, milling, dispersion, drying, coating, impregnation, converting, purification, filling or packaging with clear limits.

Commercial supply program

Quality agreement, change control, demand planning, service levels, continuous improvement and ownership of customer communication.

Useful public proof can include: equipment classes, working-volume ranges, material compatibility, containment approach, quality systems, analytical methods, packaging options, representative process families, scale-up expertise and the steps of a project. Sensitive formulas, customer identities and facility-security details stay protected.
Channel Architecture

Direct sales, distribution and private label need different information flows.

Direct technical sale

The manufacturer controls application learning, qualification support, pricing, forecast and the customer relationship. The commercial system must handle fewer but deeper opportunities.

Specialty distribution

The distributor brings territory, inventory, relationships, logistics and local selling. Success depends on product fit, enablement, lead rules, technical escalation and shared opportunity visibility.

Private label or branded supply

Identity, document ownership, claim approval, packaging, channel boundaries, end-use knowledge, quality responsibility and change communication need explicit rules.

Channel conflict often begins as an information problem. A direct team quotes an account already developed by a distributor. A distributor requests a sample without naming the end use. A manufacturer launches a campaign into a protected territory. A private-label partner makes a broader claim than the underlying data supports.

I help define lead registration, account ownership, protected projects, pricing authority, sample responsibility, technical handoffs, document access, marketing-development funds, end-use reporting and conflict resolution. The goal is not surveillance. It is enough shared reality to serve the customer and learn from the market.

Application Markets

The material gains meaning inside the industry problem it helps solve.

One chemistry may enter several industries, but the buying logic changes. Food-contact context is not aerospace qualification. Semiconductor purity is not wastewater resistance. Automotive takt time is not grid-asset service life. I build shared product truth with market-specific decision paths.

Process, Storage and Environmental Controls

Responsible operating controls are not decorative trust badges. They are part of the supply proposition.

Customers may care how raw materials are received, contained, stored, segregated, traced, processed, inspected, packaged and shipped. They may ask about moisture, temperature, contamination, ventilation, emissions, waste, wastewater, spill prevention, dust, ignition, worker exposure, emergency planning or community communication.

Marketing should not design these controls or declare compliance. It can help qualified owners explain approved systems accurately, connect them to customer concerns and avoid the opposite mistakes of silence and overstatement.

For covered operations, current requirements can be detailed and changing. OSHA’s Process Safety Management standard addresses covered processes involving highly hazardous chemicals. EPA’s Risk Management Program applies to facilities meeting specific substance and threshold conditions. Applicability and compliance belong with qualified safety, environmental, engineering and legal professionals.

Raw-material control

Approved sources, receiving checks, identification, segregation, storage conditions and traceability.

Process containment

Closed handling, local controls, equipment design, transfer methods and qualified operating procedures.

Contamination control

Cleanliness, dedicated equipment, purge, filtration, environmental control and release testing.

Temperature and humidity

Monitored conditions that protect reactive systems, powders, films, electronics materials and shelf life.

Waste and resource flows

Source reduction, reuse, recycling, treatment, disposal, water, energy and material-efficiency programs with defensible data.

Emergency planning

Approved information about response coordination, drills, notification and community interfaces when appropriate.

Change control

Material, process, site, equipment and supplier changes reviewed for customer, quality and disclosure consequences.

Packaging integrity

Container compatibility, closure, labeling, moisture protection, transport, tamper evidence and shelf-life preservation.

Primary references for qualified review: OSHA Process Safety Management, EPA Risk Management Program and EPA Pollution Prevention.

Trust Signals and Claim Governance

A precise limitation often creates more confidence than an enormous adjective.

Materials companies operate near words with commercial power: safe, non-toxic, sustainable, recyclable, recycled, bio-based, compostable, low-VOC, food-contact, medical-grade, compliant, approved, flame-resistant, antimicrobial, carbon-neutral, PFAS-free and drop-in. Each can become misleading when product, test, use, geography, time or evidence disappears.

I help create a claim register and approval path. The register connects each public statement to its exact wording, product scope, supporting source, owner, jurisdiction, review date, disclosure limits and renewal trigger. Marketing can then move with speed because the boundaries are known.

Performance claims

Name the test, conditions, specimen, units, comparison basis and difference between typical values and guaranteed limits.

Regulatory status

State the grade, intended use, jurisdiction, authorization or listing context, exclusions and responsible source.

Hazard language

Keep marketing aligned with approved labels, safety data and product-stewardship review without improvising reassurance.

Environmental benefit

Define the attribute, boundary, method, baseline, period and important tradeoffs. Broad halos need strong substantiation.

Absence claims

Clarify intentional addition, detection limit, scope, input basis, testing basis and the exact substance group involved.

Certifications and approvals

Identify who issued the credential, what it covers, its current status and what it does not establish.

Current primary context: the FTC Green Guides address environmental marketing claims and substantiation. The EPA TSCA Chemical Substance Inventory and EPA Chemical Data Reporting program are separate regulatory resources. FDA explains that food-contact authorizations are tied to substances, intended uses, specifications and limitations; see FDA Packaging & Food Contact Substances. These links support qualified review, not a marketing team’s independent compliance conclusion.
Search and AI Discovery

A buyer should be able to arrive through a property, process, failure, substrate, standard, application or replacement problem.

Product-name pages serve people who already know the answer. Growth often comes from people who know the condition and are still constructing the question. I build a discovery system that connects material families and grades to application language without manufacturing hundreds of thin pages.

Clear relationships also help AI-assisted research. A system can interpret a portfolio more reliably when identity, properties, methods, applications, processing conditions, documents, limitations, facilities and experts appear as consistent entities instead of scattered claims.

I use AI to accelerate research, classification, content operations, sales preparation, data cleanup and pattern detection. I do not use it as an unsupervised chemist, regulator or claim approver. Technical experts remain in the loop because plausible language and correct material guidance are very different products.

Problem pages

Explain a failure, constraint or desired improvement and the variables involved in a responsible material screen.

Application pages

Connect operating context, material function, evidence, process fit, qualification and next-step questions.

Grade records

Give each commercially active grade a canonical source with identity, data, documents, uses and lifecycle status.

Comparison tools

Help buyers narrow relevant candidates by transparent criteria without turning a filter into engineering approval.

Technical explainers

Teach mechanisms, methods, terminology, test interpretation and tradeoffs at the depth serious evaluators need.

Replacement pathways

Capture obsolete, unavailable, restricted or poorly performing incumbent materials with careful equivalence language.

Structured data

Apply appropriate page semantics, schema and consistent fields so systems can recognize the offer and organization.

Expert review loop

Give technical owners a manageable queue, claim boundary, source trail and cadence for updates.

For the broader discipline, see my work in AI search and organic growth.

Account Development and CRM Intelligence

The opportunity is usually an application at a program or plant, not a logo in a spreadsheet.

A global customer can contain multiple divisions, design centers, contract manufacturers, plants, approved-vendor structures and technical authorities. One group may test the material, another may specify it, another may buy it and several facilities may consume it. Account development should represent that structure.

Account map

Parent, division, business unit, facility, program, product platform, contract manufacturer, distributor and relevant partner relationships.

Application hypothesis

The technical or supply problem, likely incumbent, trigger, economic consequence and reason the material may deserve evaluation.

Stakeholder map

Researcher, evaluator, process owner, approver, sourcing lead, executive sponsor, skeptic and final user.

Qualification state

Screen, sample, laboratory test, technical iteration, plant trial, approval, specification, RFQ, award and production.

Evidence state

Documents delivered, questions open, protocols agreed, results obtained, exceptions accepted and proof still required.

Commercial state

Grade, form, annual potential, forecast confidence, timing, target margin, channel, quote and award probability.

Supply state

Site, capacity, packaging, lead time, raw materials, inventory model, continuity expectations and customer readiness.

Next-decision state

The named question, owner, action, due date and consequence of delay. “Follow up soon” is not a technical milestone.

A CRM stage should describe changed evidence or commitment, not the optimism level of the salesperson.
Content, Campaigns and Technical Selling

The work should help a qualified buyer make progress, not simply give the company something to post.

Application content program

Build problem, application, property and process content from sales questions, technical knowledge, search demand and strategic market priorities.

Product-launch system

Coordinate naming, positioning, master data, documents, internal training, channel readiness, account targets, samples, campaigns and measurement.

Technical webinar or workshop

Teach a real decision with a qualified expert, gather useful questions and create follow-up routes by audience and application.

Trade-show program

Choose target accounts and meetings before booth traffic, prepare technical briefs, route conversations and enforce post-event ownership.

Account campaign

Use a researched application hypothesis, stakeholder-specific message, relevant proof and a useful invitation instead of generic cadence spam.

Distributor activation

Turn portfolio training into account action through opportunity maps, field questions, samples, technical escalation and shared learning.

Sales and application tools

Create comparison guides, discovery prompts, qualification briefs, objection answers, process visuals and controlled evidence collections.

Executive market intelligence

Connect customer changes, standards, technology, substitutes, capacity, pricing pressure and qualification patterns to practical choices.

Trade shows deserve particular honesty. A badge scan is not evidence of demand. A useful event plan identifies the accounts, applications, people and open decisions that justify attendance. The booth then supports meetings and technical conversation, while follow-up routes each contact by fit and next action.

The same standard applies to content. A white paper should answer a question someone responsible for a material decision actually has. If it cannot change understanding, screening, evaluation or action, it may be an expensive rectangle.

Reputation and Community Confidence

Silence leaves a vacuum. Marketing language cannot fill it with trust.

Chemical facilities and material technologies can face misinformation, outdated assumptions, activist concern, neighbor anxiety, incident history, permit controversy or confusion about what a site actually makes. A defensive slogan rarely helps. People need accessible facts, credible messengers, honest uncertainty, visible operating responsibility and a way to ask questions.

I can help leadership create a reputation and community-information plan that works with qualified EHS, operations, legal, public-affairs and emergency-response owners. The work can include stakeholder research, issue mapping, approved explainers, facility context, myth-versus-fact material, listening sessions, response protocols, executive preparation, local media resources and grassroots support for a responsible plan already grounded in evidence.

Grassroots support does not mean manufacturing artificial enthusiasm. It means helping employees, suppliers, customers, educators, civic partners and informed community members understand a legitimate project well enough to speak from their own experience. Credibility collapses when advocacy looks scripted or when material facts are hidden.

Facility narrative

What the site makes, why it exists, who it serves, how it operates, what it contributes and which controls can be discussed.

Issue and misinformation map

What people believe, why the belief persists, which sources influence it, what evidence exists and which questions remain legitimate.

Response protocol

Who verifies facts, who approves language, who speaks, which channel is used and how updates remain consistent.

Community listening

Structured ways to hear concerns, document themes, answer what can be answered and route technical or emergency questions responsibly.

Project support

Clear public value, safeguards, milestones, local effects, accountability and authentic participation from informed supporters.

Long-term presence

Education, workforce partnerships, supplier participation, community updates and accessible contact beyond a single approval event.

Important boundary: I help with research, communication, positioning and stakeholder strategy. Qualified facility, safety, environmental, legal and public-agency professionals own technical determinations, emergency duties, regulatory submissions and required disclosures.

Technical Experts and Workforce

The company’s most credible commercial advantage may already work in the laboratory, plant or application team.

Chemists, materials scientists, metallurgists, ceramic engineers, process engineers, operators, quality leaders and application specialists carry the distinctions generic content cannot invent. I help convert that knowledge into useful public explanations without asking experts to become full-time copywriters.

The process can use structured interviews, whiteboard sessions, sales-question reviews, technical paper development, webinar preparation, video briefs, claim review and documented source trails. I do the commercial translation and writing; the qualified expert protects technical truth.

Expert visibility also supports recruiting. Candidates want to understand the problems, equipment, scientific environment, career path, operating culture and impact of the work. A page filled with stock photography and the word “innovation” cannot do all of that alone.

Expert profiles

Discipline, application depth, publications, patents, practical experience and the problems a customer can discuss.

Laboratory and pilot visibility

What can be tested, how development works, where evidence becomes stronger and how customer collaboration is managed.

Manufacturing careers

Real roles, shift and environment context, training, advancement, safety expectations, technical contribution and local opportunity.

Recurring Supply Growth

The first qualification is not the finish line. It is a position that must earn renewal.

Once a material enters a specification or approved position, growth can come from repeat consumption, new facilities, adjacent platforms, additional grades, reformulation, localization, second-source qualification, capacity transfers and replacement of obsolete or constrained products. None is automatic.

I help convert post-qualification knowledge into account plans. Performance, quality, delivery, technical response, change management and forecast behavior become part of the commercial message because the supplier is now being judged in production, not in a presentation.

Protect the position

Track service, quality, complaints, change, cost pressure, specification status and competitive activity at the consuming location.

Replicate responsibly

Identify facilities or platforms with similar requirements, then verify local process, approval and sourcing conditions.

Expand the material set

Use earned technical access to evaluate adjacent grades, forms, chemistries or converted products with genuine fit.

Prepare for redesign

Monitor performance targets, legislation, supplier exits, platform changes, process upgrades and customer sustainability goals.

Win second-source status

Frame continuity, local supply, capacity, technical equivalence and qualification support without pretending materials are identical.

Manage obsolescence

Give customers notice, evidence, replacement options, test guidance and enough time to protect their own approvals.

Recover stalled trials

Reconstruct the test, result, people, open concern and next decision before assuming the material failed.

Learn from lost programs

Separate technical loss, commercial loss, timing, no-decision, incumbent inertia, capacity concern and poor opportunity fit.

Executive Measurement

Count the decisions that create qualified supply, not the decorative noise around them.

The reporting question: What changed in customer understanding, technical evidence, approval commitment, commercial probability or recurring supply because of the work?

How I Help

Senior advice is useful. Senior execution is where the difficult page, system and decision finally get built.

Market and application research

I investigate buyer problems, competing approaches, substitute materials, qualification patterns, terminology, accounts, programs and market-entry choices.

Positioning and message architecture

I define market categories, application value, proof, distinctions, claim boundaries and the message hierarchy from company to grade.

Website and technical content

I plan and write deep pages, grade structures, application guides, explainers, case evidence, expert content and conversion paths.

SEO, GEO and AI discovery

I connect technical intent, product data, entities, internal links, structured information and authoritative evidence for modern discovery.

Product and document system

I help organize commercial master data, approved fields, public documents, revision behavior, claims and publishing responsibilities.

Inquiry, sample and qualification flow

I design forms, gates, routing, CRM stages, evidence capture, follow-up, dashboards and practical handoffs across commercial and technical teams.

Account and channel growth

I build target-account hypotheses, stakeholder maps, distributor tools, campaign plans, sales briefs, trade-show programs and expansion plays.

Executive advisory and operating cadence

I help leadership choose priorities, challenge assumptions, review pipelines, align functions and convert intelligence into accountable work.

Reputation and stakeholder communication

I support evidence-led facility narratives, misinformation response, community listening, project communication and authentic grassroots understanding.

Focused growth projects

I can own a launch, stalled funnel, market-entry problem, website rebuild, portfolio integration, AI-discovery initiative or other bounded commercial challenge.

Ways to Work Together

You do not need a perfect brief. You need a problem important enough to examine honestly.

Executive diagnostic

A concentrated review of market, message, product data, discovery, qualification, pipeline, evidence and operating constraints with a prioritized path.

Strategy and build

I define the system and create the pages, content, tools, workflows, briefs and measurement needed to put it to work.

Fractional senior leadership

Ongoing commercial and marketing direction for a company that needs experienced judgment and hands-on output without a large internal build.

Critical project

A defined launch, market, acquisition integration, channel program, website, reputation issue or stalled qualification challenge with direct ownership.

I can work with an established marketing team, a technical business-development group, outside specialists or a lean leadership team. I am not interested in adding meetings for ceremonial purposes. The operating rhythm should expose decisions, assign ownership and create finished work.

If the problem is not primarily marketing or growth, I will say so. A chemistry failure needs chemistry expertise. A process-safety issue needs qualified process-safety leadership. A legal interpretation needs counsel. Commercial judgment begins with recognizing the boundary.

Why Paper Boat Media

You get the person thinking with the CEO and the person doing the work.

I am Dr. Robert Urban, founder of Paper Boat Media. My work combines deep research, technical translation, market strategy, positioning, writing, digital discovery, analytics, business development and implementation. The doctorate matters less as a decoration than as evidence of how I approach difficult systems: define the question, inspect the evidence, find the mechanism, respect uncertainty and make the result understandable.

I am a consultant and working advisor, not a large firm. Clients do not hand the hardest thinking to a senior person and receive the final draft from someone they never met. I can advise an owner or board, challenge a growth thesis, interview technical experts, structure the site, write the page, design the workflow and examine the measurement.

That direct model is especially useful when the company is technically sophisticated, commercially complex or too busy to educate a rotating agency team about the difference between a typical property and a specification.

Markets and Geography

Based in Central Florida. Built for industrial decisions that cross regions, plants and supply networks.

My base is DeLand, Florida, with convenient access to Orlando, the Space Coast, Jacksonville, Tampa and industrial activity across the Southeast. I work with manufacturers, processors, converters, distributors and investors across the United States and on international market questions.

Materials supply chains rarely stay inside one city. Research, digital strategy, positioning, account planning, content, sales systems and executive work can be handled efficiently across locations. Site visits make sense when the process, people, facility, trial or stakeholder environment needs to be understood in person.

Primary Resources

Useful starting points for the qualified people responsible for current determinations.

OSHA Process Safety

29 CFR 1910.119 covers specified processes involving highly hazardous chemicals.

EPA Risk Management Program

Risk Management Program provides current information for facilities subject to covered-substance requirements.

Use these as navigation, not a universal checklist. Material, product, facility, process, volume, use and jurisdiction determine which requirements and authorities apply.

Frequently Asked Questions

Chemical, polymer and advanced materials marketing questions

What does a chemical manufacturing marketing consultant do?

I help chemical manufacturers connect market research, application positioning, technical content, product data, digital discovery, inquiries, samples, qualifications, RFQs, account development and measurement to profitable recurring supply.

Which materials companies are a fit for this work?

The work can fit specialty chemical, resin, adhesive, sealant, coating, lubricant, polymer, elastomer, composite, metal, alloy, powder, mineral, ceramic, glass, industrial gas, treatment-chemistry, converted-material and high-purity technology manufacturers.

Can you help if the company does not know exactly what service it needs?

Yes. Bring the growth goal, commercial problem or stalled pattern. I can diagnose if the next step is research, positioning, product data, a website, content, AI discovery, sample workflow, account development, reputation strategy or another focused project.

How is marketing an advanced material different from marketing a commodity?

An advanced material often requires application screening, technical evidence, process fit, testing, approval and ongoing supply confidence. The marketing system must support those decisions instead of relying mainly on availability and price.

Why should a materials website lead with applications?

Many buyers begin with a failure, performance target, substrate, process or operating environment. Application-led content connects that starting point to relevant material families, evidence and a responsible evaluation path.

What belongs on a chemical or material product page?

A useful page establishes grade identity, relevant properties, test context, applications, processing guidance, documents, packaging or supply information, limitations and a route to technical evaluation.

What is product or grade master data?

It is the controlled commercial record connecting identity, properties, methods, processing, applications, documents, claims, packaging, lifecycle status and ownership across the systems that publish or use product information.

Can you help organize TDS, SDS, CoA and specification information?

I can help design the information architecture, access, naming, revision presentation and commercial workflow. Qualified technical, quality, EHS, product-stewardship, regulatory and legal owners must create and approve controlled content within their authority.

How should sample requests be qualified?

The depth should match the cost and risk of the sample. Useful context can include application, substrate, environment, process, critical property, test plan, quantity, timing, expected production demand and the next decision.

Should samples and trials be tracked in CRM?

Yes. The record should connect the grade and lot to the evaluator, facility, application, protocol, result, technical questions, qualification state, commercial potential, owner and dated next action.

How do you market the path from laboratory test to production?

I separate bench evidence, pilot evidence, representative line trials, customer approval and supply readiness. Content should explain scale variables and support evaluation without implying that one result proves every process condition.

Can you improve RFP and RFQ response work?

Yes. I can help create pursuit gates, approved answer libraries, requirement matrices, evidence ownership, assumption registers, review steps and post-bid learning tied to fit, probability, burden, margin and strategic value.

Can you help custom formulators and toll manufacturers?

Yes. I can clarify the offer, stage-specific intake, capability evidence, development path, technology transfer, scale-up, confidentiality, quality, equipment fit and progression from technical inquiry to repeat production.

Can you help manage direct, distributor and private-label channels?

Yes. The work can define market roles, lead registration, account protection, sample ownership, technical escalation, document access, approved claims, end-use reporting, enablement and conflict resolution.

How can SEO help a chemical or advanced materials company?

SEO can connect demand expressed through chemistry, properties, processes, applications, substrates, standards, failures and replacement needs to accurate pages, technical evidence and an appropriate next step.

How can AI help materials marketing and business development?

AI can accelerate research, classification, data cleanup, content operations, sales preparation and pattern detection. It should operate with controlled sources and expert review, not make unsupervised technical, safety or regulatory determinations.

How should environmental and sustainability claims be handled?

Each claim should retain its exact product scope, attribute, method, boundary, baseline, jurisdiction, evidence, limitations, owner and review date. Qualified reviewers should approve the current statement before publication.

Can you help with misinformation or a difficult facility reputation?

Yes. I can support stakeholder research, issue mapping, approved explainers, listening, response protocols, executive preparation and authentic grassroots understanding around a responsible evidence-based plan.

Do you provide chemical, engineering or regulatory advice?

No. I provide marketing, growth, research, positioning, communication and commercial-system consulting. Qualified chemists, engineers, EHS, product-stewardship, quality, regulatory, safety, environmental and legal professionals retain their respective decisions.

Can you support a private-equity-backed materials platform?

Yes. I can help align acquired portfolios, names, grade data, documents, sites, channels, accounts, positioning, cross-selling, search visibility and measurement while protecting qualified positions and useful market equity.

Can you help launch a new chemistry, grade or production capability?

Yes. A launch can integrate market choice, naming, application hypotheses, proof, claims, master data, technical documents, samples, internal training, channel readiness, target accounts, campaigns and outcome measurement.

Which metrics matter for materials marketing?

Useful measures include qualified inquiries, accepted samples, evaluations, trials, evidence completion, qualification time, specification positions, RFQ conversion, production awards, recurring margin, expansion value and technical effort by outcome.

What can the first engagement look like?

A first engagement can be an executive diagnostic, a strategy-and-build project, fractional senior leadership or direct ownership of a defined commercial challenge. The scope should match the decision the company needs to improve.

Do you work with internal technical and marketing teams?

Yes. I can add senior strategy, research, writing, digital, workflow or project capacity while technical owners protect accuracy and internal leaders retain the relationships and decisions that belong with them.

Where do you work with manufacturers?

I am based in DeLand, Florida, and work with materials manufacturers, processors, converters, distributors and investors across the United States and on selected international market questions.

Bring the Material and the Commercial Question
