A grower can produce an excellent crop and still have a commercial problem if harvest misses the market, packout is weak, cooling is delayed, freight is unavailable, the buyer needs another size or the website cannot explain what the farm actually has available.

Fresh produce is an inventory category with a biological expiration clock.
Grain can wait in storage. Timber can wait in a yard. A tractor can wait for a buyer.
A mature cucumber is less interested in the sales team's schedule.

That makes commercial produce unusually sensitive to coordination between production and marketing.
If acreage comes into harvest faster than expected, the commercial team needs somewhere for the volume to go. Florida's competitive advantage is partly written on the calendar.
When colder regions cannot produce many fresh vegetables, Florida can be harvesting.
UF/IFAS describes Florida as a major U.S. vegetable-producing state whose peninsular geography allows it to supply vegetables during late fall, winter and early spring. More than 40 vegetable crops are grown commercially in the state.
Florida's current 2025 USDA numbers also show the scale clearly.

Florida reported 30,000 planted acres of open-field tomatoes in 2025.

Florida reported 45,000 planted acres and more than $187 million in 2025 production value.

The seasonality is equally important. FDACS currently lists typical Florida harvest windows including tomatoes from October through June, bell peppers from November through May, sweet corn from October through June, snap beans from November through May and watermelon from April through July.
Weather changes actual harvest dates, but the commercial point remains: Florida helps fill U.S. produce shelves during windows when geography matters.

“Vegetables” is convenient grocery-store language. Commercially, it hides a lot.

Cooling is not one universal procedure. Produce commodities differ in temperature sensitivity, chilling injury, moisture loss, respiration and storage compatibility.
The commercial lesson is simpler: post-harvest performance belongs in the value proposition when customers depend on usable shelf life after delivery.
“We grow tomatoes” is not enough information to buy a truckload of tomatoes.
Produce transactions become much clearer once commodity, variety, size, grade, package, origin, condition and delivery expectation are explicit.

Not every buyer requires a USDA grade, and private specifications can be more detailed or simply different. The point is that professional produce buying is specification-driven.

Water can grow the crop and still become one of the most important food-safety questions on the farm.
FDA's revised pre-harvest agricultural-water framework is now part of the current produce-safety environment.
The 2024 FDA final rule replaced the former pre-harvest microbial water-quality criteria for covered non-sprout produce with a systems-based agricultural-water assessment.
Covered farms assess factors including water systems, water-use practices, crop characteristics, environmental conditions and relevant nearby land uses to determine whether reasonably foreseeable hazards require corrective or mitigation measures.
FDA's rule includes exemptions from preparing the assessment in specific circumstances involving qualifying water whose relevant quality is reasonably likely to remain unchanged before use.
Harvest and post-harvest agricultural-water requirements are separate and were not replaced by the revised pre-harvest rule.

“Where did this come from?” becomes a very serious question during a recall.
The produce industry has been moving toward increasingly detailed lot-level supply-chain information.
FDA's Food Traceability Rule creates additional recordkeeping requirements for foods on the Food Traceability List. Covered entities maintain Key Data Elements associated with specified Critical Tracking Events across the supply chain.
Produce categories on the current list include fresh cucumbers, fresh herbs, fresh leafy greens, fresh-cut leafy greens, fresh melons, fresh peppers, fresh sprouts, fresh tomatoes and other fresh-cut vegetables.
The rule originally carried a January 20, 2026 compliance date. Congress subsequently directed FDA not to enforce the Food Traceability Rule before July 20, 2028, and FDA says it intends to comply with that directive while continuing work with affected supply-chain participants.

The Perishable Agricultural Commodities Act, commonly called PACA, establishes fair-trading rules for fresh and frozen fruits and vegetables in interstate and foreign commerce.
USDA describes PACA as protecting participants by establishing fair-trading practices, providing dispute-resolution mechanisms and creating a statutory trust that can give eligible unpaid produce sellers priority interests in specified produce-related assets.
Growers
Producers selling only what they grow are treated differently from many produce dealers, although growers can voluntarily obtain a PACA license.
Wholesalers
Firms buying or selling commercial quantities of fresh or frozen produce may need PACA licensing.
Brokers
Businesses negotiating produce transactions for others can trigger licensing rules from the first applicable transaction.
Retailers
Retail businesses can become subject to PACA licensing after crossing the applicable purchase threshold.
Prompt Payment
Payment terms and contract performance are central to the PACA trading system.
PACA Trust
Eligible sellers may receive statutory trust protections if buyers become insolvent or fail to pay.
USDA currently states that, in general, a person buying or selling more than 2,000 pounds of fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables in a day must be licensed under PACA. Retailers become subject once annual invoice-cost purchases exceed the applicable threshold, currently listed by USDA as $230,000.

Produce competes geographically because customers expect the shelf to stay full in January.
Consumers do not organize grocery demand around domestic harvest calendars. International supply helps fill the gap.
Import reliance varies dramatically by crop. USDA ERS estimated 2025 import shares around 69% for fresh tomatoes and approximately 91% for fresh cucumbers, while lettuce remained far more dependent on domestic production.
That difference matters strategically. A domestic tomato grower competes in a market with heavy import exposure. A lettuce grower faces a different supply structure. A Florida producer may also benefit from a seasonal window that changes when production moves north or imports increase.
The right strategy is not “buy American” pasted over every commodity page. It is understanding where domestic production creates a meaningful advantage: freshness, timing, customer proximity, regional identity, service, specifications, reduced transit or trusted program relationships.

A vegetable grower may not need “more leads.”
