Florida Is Funniest Between the Attractions

Florida has some of the largest, loudest and most carefully engineered attractions on Earth. There are castles, rockets, racetracks, water slides and enough themed restaurants to eat dinner inside a different historical period every night for a week.

And yet the funniest thing you see all day may be a man in a pharmacy parking lot trying to reason with an umbrella that has turned inside out.

That is the Florida I keep writing about. The state earns its reputation with the spectacular stuff, but it becomes itself in the miles between the landmarks.

The state between the landmarks

The brochure version of Florida is not false. The beaches really are beautiful. The springs look borrowed from a more responsible planet. A rocket launch can make a parking lot full of strangers stop talking at the same time, which may be our most impressive scientific achievement.

But ordinary Florida has its own production values. A thunderstorm arrives during lunch with the confidence of a headliner. A lizard appears indoors and acts annoyed that you noticed. Somebody is wearing a winter coat because the temperature dropped to 68, while a visitor from Michigan is standing nearby in shorts and trying to turn the moment into a character reference.

None of this is officially scheduled. Florida does not need a reservation system for confusion.

Small moments make the best stories

The stories people remember are rarely the ones with perfect timing. They are the ones where a simple errand develops a second act. You leave for milk and return with a Publix sub, a weather update, two mosquito bites and information about a stranger’s cousin that you were not emotionally prepared to receive.

That is why Florida humor works best when it is affectionate. The joke is not that everyone here is ridiculous. The joke is that all of us eventually adapt to ridiculous circumstances and begin giving practical advice about them. We know which cloud deserves respect. We know a screen door is not a suggestion. We know that when a neighbor says, “You might want to come see this,” footwear should be selected carefully.

Living here changes the scale of what counts as normal. It happens gradually, then all at once, usually while you are moving a small reptile with a plastic cup.

Florida never wastes the trip home

A good place gives you landmarks. A great place also gives you material. Florida is generous that way. It places comedy in checkout lines, boat ramps, neighborhood groups, gas stations and every parking lot where a shopping cart has obtained independent momentum.

You do not have to exaggerate much. In fact, exaggeration can get in the way. The true version usually has better details. The pelican is standing exactly where it should not be. The rain is falling on one side of the street. The man explaining hurricane preparedness is holding a gas-station hot dog and has somehow become the person everyone is listening to.

Those moments are not interruptions to Florida. They are Florida.

This is where the book lives

As Florida As It Gets grew from those smaller encounters. It is not a guide to the famous version of the state. It is about the Florida that follows you home, moves into the garage and starts offering opinions about your yard.

The book includes weather, wildlife, neighbors, Publix, driving, beaches and the daily negotiations required to live somewhere the atmosphere has a personality. More importantly, it is about the people who learn to love the place without pretending it is sensible.

Florida has plenty of attractions. The best stories usually happen on the way back to the car.
