Machines With Memory
Particular cars and machines followed through the decisions and circumstances that made them matter.
The machine remembers the question.
A car carries more than its specification. It carries the conditions under which somebody decided that this particular machine should exist: a racing rule, a manufacturing constraint, a new material, a stubborn designer or a changing idea of comfort.
These essays begin with individual machines. Some follow a precise chassis or prototype. Others examine a production model, a restoration argument or a decision that changed what a car could mean. The engineering matters because it gives the story something substantial to stand on.
Read across the collection and the questions change. How much weight can ambition lose? What survives when a vehicle is restored? When does a successful racing idea become a difficult road car? There is no single ranking hiding underneath the stories.
