Digital experience and exhibition communication around a substantial private collection.
The project assembled 62 vehicles over 36 months and secured the target models within the valuation ranges established for the collection. The names, ownership details and identifying chronology remain private.
My work connected research and off-market scouting with a digital provenance archive. The collection had a historical organizing idea, and the information needed to help that idea become understandable across the individual vehicles.
Give the collection a point of view
A list of remarkable cars is not yet a coherent collection story. The account needs to explain why they belong together and what the group allows someone to see.
The research and digital work helped organize model histories, restoration material and specifications. The narrative connected individual records to the larger idea. Specialist inspection and formal valuation remained with the relevant experts.
A collection's organizing idea needs to survive the catalog
The catalog can become so detailed that the larger story disappears. A useful account should let the reader move between the individual vehicle and the reason it belongs in the group.
That relationship shaped the digital archive and the writing around it. The information had to preserve particulars while allowing the historical idea to remain visible. I am interested in that editorial problem because it applies to many kinds of collections. The objects deserve close attention, and the act of bringing them together can reveal something additional. The narrative needs to make room for both.
The archive had a life after acquisition
The annual retained scope covered provenance records, maintenance-history tracking and research around prospective additions. The information system needed to remain useful as the collection developed.
What I enjoyed was the relationship between the object and the larger story. Each vehicle has its own history. The collection asks another question about how those histories relate to one another.
The digital archive and the writing helped preserve both levels. That gave the owner more than a record of acquisitions; it gave the collection an intelligible account of the idea behind it.
