Farm Visits and Direct Sales: Give the Land More Than One Way to Earn
A Central Florida farm moved beyond wholesale dependence through a connected visitor story, booking journey and direct-to-consumer offer.
Fractional CMO & Brand Architect
Central Florida / DeLand & Inland Agriculture Belt
A farm can have an excellent product and very little control over the conversation that determines its value. Wholesale buyers have their own schedules, margins and priorities. The land may carry a compelling history, but that history does not automatically produce a different revenue model.
This Central Florida assignment brought the farm's visitor experience and direct sales into the same business story. I worked as fractional CMO and brand architect, developing the positioning, writing the heritage narrative, planning the visitor journey across channels and preparing technical briefs for the booking-engine developers.
The land story had a commercial job
Heritage is useful when it helps a person understand what is distinctive about the place and why a visit or purchase belongs in their life. It becomes less useful when it occupies three beautiful paragraphs and leaves the reader wondering what the farm actually offers.
The positioning work connected those two responsibilities. The farm needed a recognizable identity, and the prospective visitor needed a practical next step. Those are different writing problems. An account of the land can build interest; an explanation of the experience has to turn that interest into a decision the operation can support.
Follow the visit beyond the booking button
A visitor journey includes the discovery that starts it, the information that makes it feel manageable, the booking and the relationship afterward. A person interested in visiting may become a direct customer. A product customer may discover a reason to come to the farm. Treating those routes as unrelated campaigns leaves useful connections unexplained.
My work was to design that connection in the messaging and experience plan. The developer briefs translated the commercial intention into requirements for the booking journey. They gave the technical team a business purpose to work toward, while the developers retained responsibility for implementing the engine.
Direct sales change the relationship
Selling directly asks the farm to carry responsibilities a wholesale intermediary previously handled. The customer needs understandable offers, clear information and a reason to come back. The brand story cannot disappear at the point where someone begins trying to buy.
That is why I regard this as more than an e-commerce assignment. The useful work sits between the identity of the place, the visitor's expectations and the revenue the business is trying to develop. A website is one expression of that work, alongside the offer and the communication around it.
What changed for the business
The farm shifted from reliance on unpredictable wholesale contracts toward a steady direct-to-consumer revenue stream, with an improvement in overall operating margins.
The lesson I take from the assignment is that a place can support more than one relationship with its audience. People can visit, buy, return and tell someone else about it. The work is to make those connections intelligible and useful, beginning with what the farm can genuinely offer.
