The Coolest Products on the PlanetA Digital Time Capsule of Innovation

A collectible business consultant's proudly subjective snapshot of the objects, tools, machines and inventions that show what modern makers, builders, tinkerers and business leaders are capable of creating right now.

2026the moment captured

What if we collected the present before it became the past?

I collect guitars, coins and other things that fit comfortably inside categories people already understand. Nobody needs a long explanation of why a rare coin, vintage instrument, important watch or first-edition book might become collectible.

As a collectible business consultant, I spend a great deal of time thinking about how objects acquire meaning. Craftsmanship matters. Provenance matters. Scarcity, cultural relevance, condition, community and the story surrounding an object can all matter. The trouble is that the usual collectible story is told backward. By the time history has agreed that something mattered, the interesting uncertainty is gone.

That got me thinking about a different question. What are the modern collectibles of right now? Not the established categories people already chase, and not a speculative list of products guaranteed to rise in value. What objects best capture the ingenuity, design, ambition and wonderfully stubborn problem-solving of this particular moment?

This is a digital time capsule built before hindsight has a chance to make the choices obvious.

The result is a snapshot of 2026: beautifully engineered tools, strange machines, useful products, ambitious vehicles, culinary equipment, electronics, outdoor systems and experiences that say something about the people making things today. Some may eventually become conventionally collectible. Some may become obsolete. Some may look ordinary to the future. That uncertainty is part of the record.

The idea is personal, too. I grew up poor. My dad had left us, and we did not have a garage. I promised myself that when I was a grownup, I was going to have one hell of a garage. I eventually got it and filled a meaningful share with tools, despite not being a great mechanic or handyman. What I lack in skill, I make up for in tools, optimism and friends who actually know what they are doing.

That garage is a reminder that the modern maker, builder, tinkerer and inventor did not disappear. Neither did the business leader willing to finance a strange idea, build a company around it and persuade the rest of us that the thing missing from our lives might be an automatic guitar tuner, a portable plasma cutter or a levitating light bulb.

Rob Urban's crowded garage wall with a large collection of tools and workshop equipment
The garage is real, the tools are real and the ambition has always been a little larger than the available wall space.

Selection principles

What earns a place in the time capsule?

“Coolest” is proudly subjective, but it is not random. An entry needs to reveal something about the moment beyond its price or popularity.

01 | Ingenuity

A genuinely clever idea

The product solves a problem in a way that feels original, elegant or audacious enough to deserve attention.

02 | Execution

Making matters

Engineering, materials, craft, manufacturing or software turns the idea into something people can actually use.

03 | Usefulness

It changes what is possible

The object lets somebody work, create, travel, cook, build, repair, play or live differently than before.

04 | Design

Form carries meaning

It looks, feels or operates in a way that expresses the thinking behind it instead of merely decorating the result.

05 | Moment

It belongs to right now

The product captures a current technology, cultural desire, business model or problem future readers may want to understand.

06 | Story

There is a human behind it

A maker, inventor, team or business took a risk and brought something into the world that did not need to exist until they made it.

A time capsule still needs evidence

A surprising amount of online product writing begins with a conclusion and reverse-engineers the evidence. This project begins with curiosity. Each profile will separate what can be established through research from what requires firsthand use, and it will never pretend that admiration is the same as experience.

Stage 01

Understand the artifact

Start with the product, its maker, the category, credible third-party evidence and the human problem that inspired it.

Stage 02

Explain why it matters now

Connect the object to present-day engineering, design, culture or business without inflating admiration into a recommendation.

Stage 03

Preserve what happens next

If I later buy it, borrow it, visit it or receive access, the profile gains a labeled field test or ownership report while preserving its original place in the 2026 snapshot.

The opening run

The first twelve product profiles

These are the strongest starting points because each captures a different part of the present: personal technology, home energy, lighting, outdoor living, workshop culture, mobility and objects that make engineering visible. Their order is editorial, not a disguised request list.

Where this series fits at Paper Boat Media

My professional work with collectible businesses often asks how established categories earn trust, build markets and help people understand value. Things Worth Wanting asks an earlier question: what is being made today that future collectors, historians, builders or ordinary curious people may want to look back on? These established pages provide the industry context without turning this project into another services page.

Questions a sensible person would ask

Especially the sensible person who noticed that 135 subjects is less a shopping list than a minor cataloging event.

Do you own everything on this list?

No. Most of these are things I do not own and have not personally tested. A place on this page means the subject is interesting enough to research, not that I am pretending to review it.

Are these product recommendations?

Not by default. The profiles explain why an object, company or experience belongs in this snapshot and what I would want to verify. Recommendations require firsthand experience and evidence.

Can a company pay to appear in the series?

No company can buy an editorial conclusion. If a company ever supplies a product, ticket, travel, loaner or other access, that relationship will be disclosed clearly on the relevant page.

What makes something a modern collectible?

For this project, it is an object that captures something important about current design, invention, engineering, culture or human ingenuity. It may never become scarce or financially valuable. Its value here is as evidence of what people were capable of making at this moment.

Is this an investment guide?

No. I work with collectible businesses, but this series does not predict appreciation, scarcity or resale value. Some subjects may become conventionally collectible. Others may become obsolete. Both outcomes can make the time capsule more interesting.

Does every wishlist entry have an article?

No. Links identify existing features, historical context or project guides. A related feature may cover a different model in the same family. Unlinked entries remain wishlist items, without a promised article.

What happens if you eventually try one?

The article gets updated. Research can become a hands-on field test, and a field test can become a long-term ownership report. Each stage will be labeled so readers know exactly what the evidence supports.

Years from now, some choices will look prophetic. Others will look ridiculous. Both are the point.

A time capsule should not flatter the future. It should tell the truth about what fascinated us before we knew what lasted. These are the products that make me believe the modern maker, builder, tinkerer, inventor and ambitious business leader are still here, creating tomorrow's history while the rest of us are busy calling it new.

A home that works with its people

Five researched features about choosing useful household technology, with attention to what each device can do and what remains the owner’s responsibility.

Games, symbols, and shared meaning

Five different ways to make a table interesting, from bargaining over resources to reading a familiar game through an artist’s shapes.

Light, music, and a reason to stay

A room becomes more useful through the choices people make inside it: control of daylight, time for listening, and a table that invites company.

Care, fit, and the quieter side of luxury

Some products earn their place through what happens after the presentation: clothes cared for, a pen that suits its recipient, a bed understood before it is ordered.

What happens around the object

A message needs an editor. A folding hull needs an owner who understands it. A prototype needs a useful question. A family calendar needs people willing to share the work.

From a kitchen drawer to a backyard full of guests

Products with very different ambitions: keeping a computer useful, making a familiar task more comfortable, sustaining a creative community, and cooking for company.

Taking less space, making more possible

A bicycle that folds, furniture that can change its arrangement, and a studio that fits in the hands. The interesting question is what each design lets its owner do next.

Three objects, three different ownership questions

Wine served a glass at a time, espresso made by hand, and luggage allowed to show its travels. These features examine what changes after a product comes home, including the responsibilities a premium business takes on when it sells that promise.

36 new stories

The ingenuity hiding in an ordinary day.

A drain, a window, a wallet, a workshop: familiar places keep giving inventors difficult problems. These stories follow the companies, mechanisms, and cultural ideas behind objects that deserve a closer look.

The kitchen has more than one kind of work

What the room can do for its people

Sanctuary 6.0: A Room Within the Room

Secure storage has to account for more than the door. The enclosure, interior, installation and environmental claims all contribute to what the object is being asked to protect.

Samsung AirDresser: The Space Between Wears

A wardrobe stores clothing; a laundry machine washes it. AirDresser occupies the interval between those jobs, treating a hanging garment as something that can receive its own care cycle.

Level Lock Pro: Intelligence Inside the Door

Most smart locks announce their electronics. Level asks the mechanism to fit inside a familiar architectural object, preserving the door’s visual language while changing how it can be used.

Food, characters, and the pleasure of a small object

The bathroom becomes more deliberate

Objects that meet the body

From the garage to the engine bay

xTool P3: The Work Around the Laser

Eighty watts describes the source. A usable workshop machine also has to know where the material is, help position the design and carry a job through the surrounding steps.
