PAPERBOAT / THE WRITING DESK

Writing & Publishing Workshop

Bring the part of the book that will not sit still.

A reveal that arrives too early. Two memories that disagree. A chapter you love but cannot place. A release date that has outrun the work. These free tools give those problems somewhere to become specific.

A useful plan leaves the writing room for discovery.

I do not want a worksheet to decide what your book should sound like. I want it to expose a decision that is difficult to see while the whole manuscript is open in front of you. What does this page reveal? Which version of the family story has support? What changes if chapter seven moves? Who is waiting for an approval?

Choose a tool by the question you need to answer today. You do not have to work through the collection in order, and a completed form is not the same as a completed book. The useful outcome is a clearer next move and a record you can take back to your draft, illustrator, editor or production team.

What is getting in the way?

01 / Let the turn do some work

Picture Book Page-Turn Planner

A picture book has two kinds of space: the space on a spread and the space between one spread and the next. This planner helps you separate what the words say, what the illustration carries and what the reader has a reason to turn toward.

Try this: a child follows muddy footprints through the kitchen. If the words announce the dog before the turn, the next picture can only confirm an answer already given. Put the discovery on the other side and examine what changes. Neither version is automatically better; the planner lets you compare the experience deliberately.

Bring a rough sequence, a short manuscript or a single troublesome scene. Leave with a spread-by-spread working board you can download and discuss. Use the page count as an experiment before you commit to a production format.

02 / Give uncertainty its own place

Memoir Interview & Evidence Organizer

One relative says the move happened before the hurricane. A photograph appears to place it afterward. The disagreement may lead to a better question, a more careful sentence or a meaningful difference in how two people experienced the same year.

The organizer keeps recollection, documents, conflicts and follow-up questions visible without forcing them into one settled account. Record what a source actually supports. A dated photograph may establish who was present; it may say nothing about why someone left.

Bring the question you intend to ask, the source you can identify and any restrictions you need to remember. The exported evidence map becomes a companion to the writing, not a substitute for the interview.

03 / Read the book above sentence level

Manuscript Revision Map

A chapter can be beautifully written and still arrive too soon. The revision map gives each chapter a job, an entry question, a delivery and a relationship to the surrounding material.

Consider a practical book that introduces an elaborate method in chapter two and explains the problem it solves in chapter five. Readers may understand every sentence and still have no reason to care. Moving the problem earlier could help; so could changing the opening example. The map holds those alternatives before you spend a week polishing the wrong sequence.

Start with one section if the manuscript feels too large. Name the decision for this revision round in plain language: move, combine, cut, expand or test a different approach. Take the exported map into the next editing conversation.

04 / Find the handoff behind the deadline

Book Production Schedule Builder

A cover can be under discussion while the manuscript is being revised. Final interior proofing depends on a laid-out interior. Those are different relationships, and giving every task the same start date hides them.

Use your own start date, task durations, predecessor choices and buffers to build a dependency plan. For example, compare a design task that can begin at project start with one that must wait for an approved manuscript. Then look at what moves when that approval moves.

The result is a schedule built from the lead times you enter. Confirm those times with the people doing the work, save the plan, and return to it when the scope changes. A deadline becomes useful when the team can see the decisions that support it.

05 / Put the print quote in context

Book Edition Cost Worksheet

A larger run can lower the cost per copy while increasing the amount you must spend today. Before choosing the smaller unit number, compare the whole quote: printing, allocated preparation, separate setup, delivery and any other entered costs.

Keep the edition specification and quote date beside the amounts. A paperback and a casebound edition may serve different purposes; two paperback quotes may differ only in quantity. The worksheet preserves those assumptions and distinguishes ordered copies from copies available for your intended use.

Leave missing costs blank. The exported worksheet will identify them rather than quietly treating them as zero. Once both scenarios are complete, compare total outlay and per-copy averages, then decide what the numbers mean for this book.

Before you pull up a chair

Do I need an account or email address?

No. These five tools are free and ungated. You can use their worksheets and user-triggered downloads without submitting an inquiry.

Where should I keep my work?

Download your working output before leaving the tool. Treat the page as a workbench and your own files as the record you keep and share.

Which tool should I use first?

Start with the uncertainty that is preventing the next decision. A memoir research question belongs in the evidence organizer; a chapter-order question belongs in the revision map. You can move between them as the project changes.

The worksheet ends. The judgment continues.
