DeLand Marketing Agency & Marketing Consultant for Businesses That Want to Get Found, Remembered & Chosen
I help DeLand businesses figure out what will actually move growth forward, then I can connect AI consulting, GEO, SEO, PPC, WordPress web design, websites, hosting, writing, content, analytics, conversion and business strategy to make it happen.
I am Dr. Robert Urban, founder of Paper Boat Media, and I am actually based in DeLand. Some people around town know me through marketing and consulting. Plenty know me because I wrote something that made them laugh. I am perfectly happy with either introduction.
If you need more qualified leads, more customers, better search visibility, stronger AI presence, a new website, better writing, improved conversion or simply a smarter growth plan, I can help diagnose what is getting in the way and work across the pieces required to fix it. Sometimes that is marketing execution. Sometimes it is strategy. Often it is both.
Before somebody buys another tool, launches another ad or redesigns another homepage, I want to know what the business is actually trying to accomplish.
I have seen businesses spend a remarkable amount of money solving the wrong marketing problem.
Traffic is low, so they buy ads. Leads are poor, so they buy more ads. Conversion is weak, so somebody redesigns the logo. Sales are inconsistent, so everyone starts posting more on Instagram.
Six months later there is a new logo, a larger media bill and approximately the same business problem.
My job is to look at the entire system.
What are you selling? Who should buy it? What is that customer worth? How do they discover businesses like yours? What causes them to trust one company over another? Where are they dropping out? What are competitors doing well? What are they doing terribly? And which improvement would have the greatest commercial effect?
That gives SEO, PPC, AI, websites, writing, automation and content a job to do.
Can people find you?
Google, local search, maps, AI assistants, advertising and the places customers already spend attention.
Do they understand you?
Positioning, messaging, services, specialization, expertise and why your business belongs on their shortlist.
Do they remember you?
Voice, ideas, stories, personality and the signals that make a business feel recognizably different.
Can they take action?
Websites, landing pages, calls, forms, booking, offers, sales handoff and follow-up.
Marketing in DeLand is wonderfully local, and that changes how trust works.
I live in Glenwood, in DeLand. That matters less as a keyword than it does as context: I see the same roads, businesses, events, growth, frustrations and conversations that shape the market my local clients are operating in.
DeLand is large enough to support serious companies, professional firms, healthcare providers, contractors, manufacturers, restaurants, attractions, nonprofits and growing entrepreneurs.
It is also small enough that your online reputation eventually runs into your real-world reputation at a coffee shop, a school event, downtown, at Publix or through somebody who knows somebody who knows exactly how your last project went.
I like that.
It rewards businesses that actually do good work.
Downtown has an unusually strong independent-business identity. Stetson brings students, faculty, professional talent, entrepreneurship and business education into the community. DeLand is the Volusia County seat, sits between the Orlando and Daytona markets, and gives local companies access to a much larger Central Florida economy.
So “local marketing” here can mean several very different things: winning customers five minutes away, building authority throughout West Volusia, attracting business across Central Florida, or using DeLand as home base for a company serving clients across the country.
In DeLand, some people know me as the marketing guy. Plenty know me as the guy who wrote something that made them laugh.
That familiarity is not separate from marketing. It is one of the best demonstrations I know of how marketing actually works.
Paper Boat Media has built a highly engaged Facebook audience of more than 20,000 followers around writing, humor, observations, business ideas and the occasional post that probably began with me thinking, “I really should keep this to myself.”
They are not all from DeLand, and I would never pretend they are. But here at home, years of writing, posting, conversations and community visibility have created something advertising alone has a hard time buying: familiarity.
Someone laughs at something I write.
Months later they recognize my name.
Then they see something serious I wrote about marketing, AI or business strategy. A friend mentions Paper Boat Media. Eventually their company needs a new website, better SEO, a consultant or help figuring out why growth has stalled.
Nothing magical happened.
Attention became familiarity. Familiarity reduced uncertainty. Expertise gave that familiarity substance. When the need finally appeared, the name was already there.
You do not have to be funny to market a business well. You do have to be worth remembering.
I do not need every client to buy every service. I need the right problem to meet the right expertise.
The advantage of working with me across strategy, marketing, technology and writing is that I do not have to pretend every problem is SEO because I sell SEO, PPC because I sell PPC, or a new website because I build websites.
Help the right people discover you.
Search behavior now crosses Google, Maps, AI assistants, advertising platforms, social channels, referrals and traditional research. I help businesses create stronger discoverability without treating every channel as an unrelated project.
Give people a reason to notice, remember and trust you.
Content should not exist because somebody said businesses need to post three times a week. Writing, social content, thought leadership and video should make expertise clearer, give the business a recognizable point of view and create familiarity before the buying decision happens.
Turn attention into inquiries, customers and revenue.
A ranking is not revenue. A click is not a customer. I work on the parts in between: websites, landing pages, messaging, calls to action, forms, offers, credibility and the sequence that helps somebody confidently take the next step.
Figure out where growth should come from.
Sometimes the most valuable thing I do is help somebody make a better decision before a large amount of money gets attached to the wrong one. Positioning, markets, customer acquisition, business development, go-to-market planning and executive marketing strategy all live here.
Make marketing easier to understand and improve.
Marketing automation, dashboards and predictive analytics help turn disconnected activity into a learning system. The point is not to produce more reports. It is to know what deserves the next dollar and the next hour.
“What service do I need?” is usually the wrong first question.
Start with what is happening in the business. The likely marketing work becomes much easier to identify.
| What You Are Seeing | What I Would Investigate | Possible Work |
|---|---|---|
| “Customers cannot find the business.” | Search demand, local visibility, technical issues, authority, AI representation and paid opportunity. | SEO, Local SEO, GEO/AEO, content, PPC. |
| “People see the business but do not remember it.” | Brand voice, differentiation, content quality, personality, authority, storytelling and message consistency. | Writing, social media, positioning, video, content strategy. |
| “Traffic comes in but leads do not.” | Search intent, message match, credibility, offers, forms, calls to action and user experience. | CRO, website work, landing pages, messaging. |
| “The website embarrasses me.” | Positioning, structure, mobile experience, content, search architecture, performance and maintainability. | WordPress design, website development, hosting. |
| “Marketing feels expensive and random.” | Channel economics, attribution, customer value, priorities, strategy and measurement. | Consulting, Fractional CMO, dashboards, analytics. |
| “Competitors keep getting chosen.” | Positioning, proof, reviews, authority, reputation, customer psychology and differentiation. | Strategy, writing, SEO, authority content, website improvement. |
| “Growth is needed, but the source is unclear.” | Market opportunity, ideal customers, new offers, geography, pricing, acquisition channels and sales constraints. | Growth consulting, GTM strategy, Fractional CMO. |
Search is changing. The reason somebody chooses a business really is not.
A DeLand customer used to search:
marketing agency DeLand
They still might.
But now they may ask:
“I own a growing company in DeLand and need someone local who understands SEO, Google Ads, AI search, WordPress, writing and business strategy. I do not want a giant agency. Who should I talk to?”
That question contains more information than a keyword ever did.
AI-search consulting is partly about helping systems such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI experiences understand those relationships: what a company does, whom it serves, where it operates, what expertise exists, what evidence supports it and how all those things connect.
Writing matters here too. AI systems need substantive, understandable information to interpret. A company cannot become a strong answer if its website barely says anything worth understanding.
SEO did not suddenly become obsolete.
Technical accessibility still matters. Useful content matters. Clear entities matter. Internal architecture matters. Authority matters. Original expertise matters.
Google says its established SEO best practices remain relevant to AI Overviews and AI Mode.
So I treat GEO and AEO as an expansion of good search strategy, not a reason to throw twenty years of useful fundamentals into Lake Beresford.

AI search, GEO & organic growth →
If the question is specifically how a DeLand business becomes stronger in organic search, Google Maps, technical SEO, content architecture, conversational search and the local application of GEO, see my DeLand SEO Consultant page.
And if the AI question is happening inside the business , workflows, automation, internal knowledge, CRM and system integration, governance, adoption or training , that belongs in my DeLand AI Integration work rather than pretending every AI problem is a search problem.
Being mentioned by an AI is not the finish line. Being accurately understood, trusted and relevant when a buyer is making a decision is the point.
Sometimes your marketing is working and the website is quietly ruining everything.
A customer finds you.
Excellent.
Then the site loads slowly, looks twelve years old, says almost nothing useful, makes the phone number difficult to find and has a contact form that feels like a mortgage application.
That is not a traffic problem.
I build and improve WordPress websites around the entire buying journey: search visibility, AI understanding, messaging, writing, mobile usability, proof, speed, conversion and the practical reality that somebody is probably viewing the site while doing three other things.
A good business website should answer these quickly:
- What do you actually do?
- Is it for someone like me?
- Do you serve my location?
- Why should I believe you?
- What makes you different?
- Do you sound like a real organization?
- What happens if I contact you?
- What should I do next?
Sometimes you do not need another vendor. You need somebody who can sit on your side of the table.
Strategic Advisor
Useful when leadership needs experienced outside judgment around markets, positioning, growth, marketing investment or a decision that is difficult to evaluate from inside the company.
Fractional CMO
Useful when the business needs executive marketing direction, priorities, accountability and coordination without adding a full-time executive position.
Hands-On Partner
Useful when strategy needs to become actual work: a website, content, writing, SEO, paid campaigns, analytics, messaging, automation or another practical deliverable.
If you are looking for an outsourced marketing manager in DeLand, I can take responsibility for an agreed scope of planning, execution and reporting. Together, the business owner and I define the priorities, budget, deliverables and measures of success, with clear responsibilities for any existing staff or vendors.
My favorite consulting outcome is not a longer marketing to-do list. It is a business that finally knows what should happen next and what can stop.
Customers do not all buy the same way, so I do not market every industry the same way.
Industry experience matters because the customer, economics, risk, language and buying cycle change. A homeowner with water coming through the ceiling is operating on a different timeline than a procurement team sourcing an industrial supplier.
Museums, Attractions & Entertainment
Visitors, memberships, attendance, experiences, events, tourism and community relevance.
Home & Building Services
Service areas, local search, reviews, calls, PPC, lead quality, jobs and operational capacity.
Manufacturing & Industrial
Technical buyers, engineers, distributors, RFQs, capabilities, proof and long sales cycles.
Professional Services
Expertise, referrals, trust, authority, reputation and high-value consultation decisions.

Credibility, patient confidence, professional authority, complex information and local visibility.

Luxury Brands & Experiences

Nonprofits & Associations
Donors, members, volunteers, sponsors, boards, community trust, participation and mission.
The advice should fit the business you actually have.
Solopreneurs, Consultants & Independent Experts
When the brand and expertise largely live in one person, authority, positioning, writing and trust do a remarkable amount of heavy lifting.

Explore VC marketing consulting →Veteran-Owned Businesses
Growth, visibility, strategy and a credible way to integrate veteran ownership when it matters to customers and opportunity.
Veteran-owned business consulting →Woman-Owned Businesses
Positioning, certification opportunities, growth strategy, visibility and customer acquisition without turning ownership into the entire brand.
Woman-owned business consulting →People rarely choose the business with the most marketing. They choose the one that makes the decision feel easiest to defend.
A buyer wants to feel confident.
A homeowner wants to know you will show up.
An executive wants to know hiring you will not make them look foolish.
A donor wants to know the mission and money are in responsible hands.
A procurement team wants enough technical proof to reduce risk.
A local customer wants to know whether their neighbor has heard of you.
Marketing helps answer those concerns before the sales conversation even begins.
That is why I care about more than keywords and clicks.
Positioning matters. Writing matters. Reviews matter. Design matters. Humor can matter. Useful explanations matter. Showing that you understand the customer's world matters.
In a place like DeLand, where digital reputation and real-world reputation regularly run into each other, it matters even more.
The goal is not to manufacture a personality. It is to make the real strengths of the organization easier to notice, understand, trust and remember.
I like marketing metrics. I like business results more.
Rankings, traffic, impressions, engagement, followers and clicks can all matter. I care about those numbers because they help me determine whether the business is becoming easier to discover, easier to remember, easier to choose and more effective at turning demand into economic value.
Local SEO is not a city-name substitution exercise.
A strong DeLand presence should make geographic sense because the actual business makes geographic sense.
That can include accurate Google Business Profile information , reviews, relevant service areas, local links, useful location context, strong writing, technically sound pages and clear evidence that the company really serves the people it says it serves.
The profile itself has a more specific job: setup, categories, services, photos, review requests, posts, verification and ongoing profile governance. My Google Business Profile Consultant guide goes deeper on that asset. The broader question of how a DeLand business competes across organic search and Maps stays with my DeLand SEO work.
Google warns against substantially similar city pages created primarily to capture closely related local searches and funnel visitors toward the same destination.
That is exactly why DeLand, Daytona Beach and Orlando should be genuinely different authority pages rather than a city-name mail merge.

Maybe you need more leads. Maybe Google cannot find you. Maybe AI systems do not understand you. Maybe the website is overdue for retirement. Maybe the writing sounds like everyone else. Maybe paid ads are burning money. Maybe the business has grown faster than the strategy supporting it.
Or maybe you just want an experienced person to look at everything and tell you what makes sense.
That is a perfectly good reason to call.
