Digital Transformation

Digital Transformation

Digital transformation has been a buzzword for a few years now. I love the way Salesforce defines it “Digital transformation is the process of using digital technologies to create new — or modify existing — business processes, culture, and customer experiences to meet changing business and market requirements. This reimagining of business in the digital age is digital transformation.”

Adoption has been staggered. Millennials, and generations to follow them, led the digital transformation age and many large businesses followed suit. However, there are many large companies, small businesses and individuals that have been reluctant to embrace the change. For example, I work with an owner of a large reporting company who hates that one of the software programs she uses is now only offered “in the cloud”. Another friend of mine commutes almost an hour to a company that requires all workers to be in the office for everything, yet he says he has no association or interaction at all with any coworkers and they all work in silos.

Digital Transformation Catalyst

Enter… the coronavirus. This pandemic has affected not only your city, but every other place in the world. It has made us reconsider education, entertainment, business, travel and every other area of life. When this is all said and done, this virus will have a lasting effect on every business. Due to our forced quarantines, curfews, sequesters, social distancing and self-containment those who have not fully embraced digital transformation will now be forced to.

There are four main areas of digital transformation. These include: business process, business models, technology, and cultural/organizational. Within these four areas business leaders are making meaningful investments and commitments to “going digital”, but often they still feel like they’re struggling.. The reality is that the new world moves at lightning speed and to compete in this world, organizations need to think fast, decide fast, execute fast, fail fast, learn fast, and scale fast. And doing so, is not about simply introducing digital technologies and saying “Learn this new tool”. Instead it requires a fundamental shift in how organizations structure, lead, attract, develop, and engage their people.
